The third installment of the Twilight series had a record breaking Wednesday night opening.
The film was released on June 30, 2010 and was the first of the Twilight films to be released in IMAX theaters. It set a record for the biggest midnight opening in the United States and Canada in box office history, making $30 million in over 4,000 theaters. Eclipse took the record spot of The Twilight Saga: New Moon which had $26.3 million in 3,514 theaters.
Eclipse also took the record for largest Wednesday opening in domestic history, taking out Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It also brought in $24 million in sales on Thursday, July 1, 2010 and another $28.6 million on Friday.
Eclipse
The film was based on Stephenie Meyer's 2007 novel Eclipse in the Twilight series. It is the third installment in the series following the 2008 film Twilight and the 2009 film New Moon. The movie stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.
The film was directed by British film director David Slade who is most noted for creating music videos with such artists as Tori Amos, Stone Temple Pilots and System of a Down. His first feature length film was Hard Candy in 2009.
Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who also wrote the scripts for Twilight and New Moon, returned to write the script for Eclipse. She has worked in both film and television, working on such shows as Ally McBeal and Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman. She has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and two Writers Guild of America Awards. She won a Peabody Award.
In this third installment of the Twilight series, Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria, one of the vampires. Howard has been in such films as The Village, Lady in the Water, and Spiderman 3.
Eclipse Mini Plot
The film picks up from the second book. Victoria, a vampire, is set to destroy Bella Swan for killing Victoria's mate, James. Victoria has begun to create an army of newborn vampires, however these newborns are "extremely messy" about their feeding habits.
The humans in the Seattle, Washington area begin noticing a string of murders. The Cullens, a human-friendly family of vampires, suspects it is Victoria. The story continues with the struggle of Bella and Edward Cullen's love and if they will get married.
The Cullens join forces with a local wolf pack to defend the people of Forks, Washington and to save Bella.
Breaking Dawn
The next installment of the Twilight series is the fourth book, Breaking Dawn. Summit Entertainment announced in November of 2008 that they had the rights to the book. It was also announced that the studio would split the story into two films.
The film's first part is scheduled for release in mid-November of 2011 and be directed by Bill Condon. Cnodon has also directed Dreamgirls, Chicago, and Kinsey.
